You were planning to sit TikTok out. “Dancing teenagers, not for us.” A charming strategy, it’s just that as of this week it no longer works. TikTok Shop in Austria has been live since 15 June, and that turns the app from a time sink into a till. People now buy directly from videos, livestreams and brand profiles, with no detour via your webshop, no “link in bio” and no excuses.

Before you click this away like a cookie banner, this isn’t trend chatter. It’s a new sales channel opening up in your market right now. The question is no longer whether, but how strategically you go in before your competitors do.

What really happened on 15 June

A quick look at the facts, because at oha! we’d rather work with numbers than hype.

  • TikTok Shop has been available in Austria since 15 June, launching alongside the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland, and in addition to markets such as Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

  • Austrian businesses have been able to register since 1 June, and onboarding runs through the TikTok Shop Academy.

  • There are three ways to sell, namely shoppable videos, live shopping (products in real time) and a dedicated Shop tab in the app.

  • There are over 2.7 million monthly users on TikTok in Austria. That’s no niche audience any more, and it’s no longer just “the youngsters” or Gen Z.

  • With the “Sell Across Europe” feature, you sell across Europe with a single registration, even as a small business.

  • On board at launch are Hitschies, Neoh (the Viennese scale-up is a launch partner) & Judith Williams. A mix of small and big.

Why this matters for big brands too, not just D2C start-ups

There’s a stubborn misconception that social commerce is for fizzy-drink brands and impulse buys. The numbers say otherwise, and pretty loudly.

  • Global TikTok Shop revenue (GMV) is expected to reach around 112 billion US dollars in 2026, after 64 billion in 2025 and 33 billion in 2024.

  • Brands with over $30 million in revenue grew their TikTok Shop sales by 97%. Those who got in 12 months ago are often 3 to 5 times as big on the channel today.

  • TikTok Shop converts at around 4.7%, a figure many webshops can only dream of. Almost 58% of users buy directly in the app.

Translated, for an SME, TikTok Shop is the chance to suddenly sell across Europe with no logistics fortress and no huge budget. For the big brand, the question is whether to take the channel itself or watch a nimble D2C brand overtake it with its own audience. Both can lose by doing nothing.

The part almost everyone misses is that TikTok has long been a search engine

Here comes the strategic twist. For a large share of under-30s, TikTok isn’t “just” entertainment, it’s the first port of call for product search. They’re not googling “best protein bars” any more, they’re searching for them in the app. With TikTok Shop, search, recommendation and till merge into a single swipe.

That means findability on TikTok is the new visibility. Your product titles, hashtags, video subtitles and reviews are your SEO in the Shop tab. Optimise here and you get found and bought. Just upload and hope, and you get scrolled past.

No more “let’s just wait and see”. What does your TikTok Shop strategy look like?

There’s no reason to rush headlong into opening a shop. But there’s every reason to make a decision. Here’s how we’re approaching it with our clients at oha! right now.

  1. Make the channel decision deliberately. Does your product suit discovery shopping? Is your audience under 35 and on TikTok? If so, staying out is a decision too, just a bad one.

  2. Secure your handle and setup now. Registration has been open since 1 June. Set up your brand name, shop profile and legal basics (imprint, right of withdrawal, shipping) properly.

  3. Think creators, not commercials. On TikTok, credibility sells, not gloss. Real faces, honest demos, live shopping with personality.

  4. Treat product data like SEO. Clear titles, relevant keywords, good reviews, clean categories. Findability in the Shop tab can be planned.

  5. Start small, measure hard. Test three to five hero products and one live format, and watch conversion and returns. Scale what works.

The key points in 30 seconds

  • TikTok Shop has been live in Austria since 15 June, a genuine new sales channel and not a trend.

  • It’s relevant at every size. SMEs sell across Europe via “Sell Across Europe”, and big brands defend their audience.

  • TikTok is a search engine, so product data and findability are the new SEO in the Shop tab.

  • Decide now and start properly, which means small, creator-led and measurable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Since when has TikTok Shop been available in Austria?

TikTok Shop has been live in Austria since 15 June 2026, launching alongside the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland. Austrian businesses have been able to register since 1 June 2026.

Is TikTok Shop worthwhile for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)?

Yes, especially for SMEs. With the “Sell Across Europe” feature, you sell across Europe with a single registration and no international logistics of your own. What matters is whether your audience is active on TikTok and whether your product suits discovery and impulse buying.

What fees does TikTok Shop charge?

Registering a seller account is free, and a sales commission applies per transaction. At the German launch it was around 5% (incl. VAT), and in 2026 it was raised to around 9% for several EU markets. You’ll find the binding, currently valid rates for Austria in TikTok Seller Center.

What do I need to open a TikTok Shop in Austria?

You need a registered business, a TikTok for Business account and a verified seller account in TikTok Seller Center. Onboarding runs through the TikTok Shop Academy.

How exactly do I sell through TikTok Shop?

There are three ways, namely shoppable videos (products right in the video), live shopping (selling in real time in a livestream) and a dedicated Shop tab in your brand profile.

Is TikTok Shop relevant for larger, established brands too?

Yes. Global TikTok Shop revenue is expected to reach around 112 billion US dollars in 2026, and brands with over $30 million in revenue grew their sales by 97%. If you don’t take the channel, you leave it to nimbler competitors in the same audience.
