In a nutshell

  • Since 27 September 2026, B2C shops have needed the uniform EU statutory warranty notice, unaltered and visible before purchase.

  • The GARAN label only comes on top if the manufacturer gives a free guarantee of more than 2 years on the whole product.

  • From 1 October 2026 the withdrawal button is mandatory, otherwise the withdrawal period is extended.

  • If customers choose repair over replacement, the statutory warranty is extended once by 1 year.

  • The obligation to repair lies with manufacturers, and with retailers only if they import from non-EU countries.

  • Shopify has no native withdrawal button, while WooCommerce solves a lot with Germanized 4.1 or German Market 4.0.

The statutory warranty label in your webshop has been mandatory since Sunday, 27 September 2026. On 1 October the withdrawal button and the repair amendment follow. If you sell goods to consumers, your shop is being hit from three sides at once. In plain terms, you should take a look at your theme and checkout today.

Below you’ll find the short version, including click paths for Shopify and WooCommerce. (As of 29 September 2026, not legal advice.)

“Three changes in four days, and Shopify has no solution of its own for the withdrawal button.”

What’s really changing with the statutory warranty label in your webshop?

The amendment is made up of four building blocks that land very close together.

The statutory warranty notice (since 27 September). Austria’s Consumer Rights Amendment Act 2026 (Verbraucherrechts-Änderungsgesetz) implements EU Directive 2024/825. According to the WKO, the Austrian Economic Chamber, retailers must display a uniform, unalterable EU-wide notice stating that a statutory warranty applies to goods. It has to be visible before purchase, online for example on the website and in the order confirmation. The technical basis is Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960, including a QR code and a colour version.

The GARAN label (since 27 September, only if needed). If the manufacturer offers a free durability guarantee of more than two years on the entire product, you also need the GARAN label. According to the WKO, it belongs on the product page, in the checkout summary and in the confirmation email, together with the guarantee period, brand and model identifier.

The withdrawal button (from 1 October). Shops need a “Vertrag widerrufen” (withdraw from contract) function, then a short form, then “Widerruf bestätigen” (confirm withdrawal) and a confirmation by email. According to the WKO, this applies to contracts concluded after 30 September 2026. The original date was 19 June, but the Federal Council moved the start to 1 October when it passed the law on 15 July 2026. If the button is missing, the withdrawal period is extended.

The repair amendment (from 1 October). The Goods Repair Directive Implementation Act (Warenreparaturrichtlinie-Umsetzungsgesetz) was published on 27 July 2026 in the Federal Law Gazette. If customers choose repair rather than replacement in a warranty case, the statutory warranty is extended once by one year, according to the WKO, up to a maximum of three years.

Who’s affected and who isn’t?

Affected is anyone who sells goods to consumers. According to seo-küche, that covers specialist retailers as well as marketplace sellers. For the withdrawal button, every distance contract concluded via an online interface counts, so webshop, app or console.

Not affected are pure B2B contracts. The withdrawal button also excludes contracts concluded solely through individual communication such as telephone or email (WKO). According to seo-küche, the label doesn’t apply to purely digital products and services. All changes in the repair amendment apply only towards consumers.

Retailers can breathe out here. The actual obligation to repair lies with the manufacturers, then with authorised representatives and importers. According to the WKO, you’re only the point of contact if you import goods from outside the EU yourself. And it only applies to products covered by EU repair requirements, which according to KONSUMENT include washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, vacuum cleaners, televisions, smartphones and tablets.

Why does this hit SMEs and big brands alike?

SMEs rarely have a legal department, but they do have plugins on default settings. Corporates have legal departments, but also five shops, eight languages and product data from twenty supplier systems. According to seo-küche, the “biggest practical problem” is the same for both, namely manufacturers’ guarantee data arriving incomplete or inconsistent.

Then there’s a social factor. If you send traffic to product pages via Instagram Shopping, ads or TikTok Shop, you’re selling on a surface that now contains mandatory elements. That gives your design fixed guardrails, because according to creeb the label may neither be recoloured nor adapted to your design. By the way, advertising the statutory warranty as a “benefit” is a classic mistake, because it’s simply the law.

How do you implement this in Shopify and WooCommerce?

These seven steps apply whatever system you’re on.

  1. Work out whether you’re affected. List your B2C markets, active languages and pure B2B channels.

  2. Record your GARAN products. For each item, document manufacturer, model, guarantee period, free yes/no, full coverage yes/no.

  3. Use the official label files. RGB version, unaltered, don’t swap the QR code (creeb).

  4. Place the statutory warranty notice prominently. At shop level, in the checkout and in the order confirmation, not just tucked away in the footer.

  5. Build in the withdrawal button. Accessible without login, throughout the entire withdrawal period, with email confirmation.

  6. Update your T&Cs and warranty page. Cover the choice of repair over replacement and the one-off extension by one year.

  7. Test everything. Mobile, all languages, guest checkout and all payment methods.

Shopify

You build the label in as a global theme section or app block. For the order confirmation, adjust the email template under Settings → Notifications. GARAN data is best maintained as metafields per product. For the checkout, creeb says to use a checkout UI extension with Shopify Plus, while on the standard plans an additional confirmation step under Settings → General → Order processing does the job. Test express payment methods such as Shop Pay or Apple Pay separately, as they often skip the cart.

For the withdrawal button, Shopify currently has no native solution, and in its Help Center it points to self-service returns and cancellation rules. Realistic options are an app (ideally with order integration) or a custom build with Shopify Forms and Flow.

WooCommerce

The fastest route is Germanized from version 4.1 or German Market from 4.0. In Germanized, you’ll find the label options under WooCommerce → Settings → Germanized → Preisauszeichnung (price labelling), and there are shortcodes such as [gzd_legal_guarantee] or [gm_legal_guarantee_label] (Webchaniker). After the update the label is deactivated by default, and with the block checkout you have to add the blocks manually. According to easyRechtssicher, the withdrawal button comes with Germanized, German Market or standalone plugins. Check that text and deadlines match the Austrian version, because some of these guides are based on German law.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the statutory warranty amendment for webshops

When does the statutory warranty label apply to webshops in Austria?

The uniform statutory warranty notice has applied since 27 September 2026. The withdrawal button is mandatory from 1 October 2026 (for contracts concluded after 30 September 2026), and the Goods Repair Directive Implementation Act also takes effect on 1 October 2026.

Do I have to offer repairs myself as a webshop?

Usually not. The obligation to repair lies primarily with the manufacturers, then with authorised representatives and importers. As a retailer you’re only the first point of contact if you import goods from outside the EU.

Does the amendment also apply to B2B shops?

No. The changes only apply towards consumers. For the withdrawal button, B2B contracts and contracts concluded solely through individual communication such as telephone or email are excluded.

Do I need the GARAN label for every product?

No. You only need it if the manufacturer gives a free durability guarantee of more than two years on the entire product. It belongs on the product page, in the checkout summary and in the confirmation email.

What happens if the withdrawal button is missing?

The withdrawal period is extended if the button is missing or doesn’t meet the requirements. It must be accessible without login, stay available throughout the entire withdrawal period and lead via a form and the “Widerruf bestätigen” (confirm withdrawal) button to a confirmation by email.

Are there ready-made solutions for Shopify and WooCommerce?

For WooCommerce, Germanized from version 4.1 and German Market from version 4.0 cover the label, and these or standalone plugins provide withdrawal functions. According to specialist sources, Shopify has no native withdrawal function, so apps or a custom build with Shopify Forms and Flow are the way to go. You add the label via a theme section or app block.
