You actually wanted to sit TikTok out. “Dancing teenagers, not for us.” A charming strategy – it just doesn't work anymore starting this week. Since June 15th, TikTok Shop has been live in Austria, turning the app from a time-sink into a cash register. People now buy directly from videos, live streams, and brand profiles – without detour via your online shop, without "link in bio", without excuses.

Before you click this away like a cookie banner notice: this isn't some fleeting trend banter. This is a new sales channel that is just launching in your market. The question is no longer if, but how strategically you enter it before your competitors do.

What actually happened on June 15th

Just the facts, because at oha! we prefer to work with figures rather than hype:

  • TikTok Shop has been available in Austria since June 15th – launched simultaneously with the Netherlands, Belgium, and Poland, in addition to markets like Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.

  • Austrian businesses have been able to register since June 1st; onboarding runs via the TikTok Shop Academy.

  • Sales are driven through three avenues: Shoppable Videos, Live Shopping (products in real-time), and a dedicated Shop Tab within the app.

  • In Austria, there are over 2.7 million monthly users on TikTok. This is no longer a niche audience, and it's no longer just "young people" or Gen Z.

  • Through the “Sell Across Europe” feature, you can sell across Europe with a single registration – even as a small business.

  • On board for the launch: Hitschies, Neoh (the Vienna-based scale-up is a launch partner) & Judith Williams. A mix of both small and large.

Why this concerns major brands too – not just D2C startups

There is a persistent misconception that social commerce is only for soda brands and impulse purchases. The numbers paint a completely different picture – and quite clearly so:

  • Global TikTok Shop gross merchandise value (GMV) is projected to reach around 112 billion US dollars in 2026 – following $64 billion in 2025 and $33 billion in 2024.

  • Brands with revenues over $30M increased their TikTok Shop sales by 97%. Those who got in 12 months ago are often 3 to 5 times larger on the channel today.

  • TikTok Shop converts at around 4.7% – a figure many webshops can only dream of. Nearly 58% of users purchase directly within the app.

In other words: for an SME, TikTok Shop is the opportunity to suddenly sell across Europe without needing a logistics fortress and a massive budget. For the major brand, the question is whether to claim the channel themselves – or watch a nimble D2C brand outpace them with their target audience. Both can lose by doing nothing.

The part almost everyone overlooks: TikTok has long been a search engine

Here comes the strategic twist. For a large portion of under-30s, TikTok is not "just" entertainment – it is the first port of call for product searches. They no longer Google "best protein bar"; they search for it in the app. With TikTok Shop, search, recommendations, and checkout merge into a single swipe.

This means: findability on TikTok is the new visibility. Your product titles, hashtags, video captions, and reviews are your SEO in the Shop tab. Optimize here, and you will be found and bought. Upload and just hope, and you will be scrolled right past.

No wait-and-see attitude – What does your TikTok Shop strategy look like?

There’s no need to rush headlessly into opening a shop. But there is certainly reason to make a decision. Here is how we at oha! are currently approaching this with our clients:

  1. Make the channel decision deliberately. Does your product suit discovery-driven purchases? Is your target group under 35 and on TikTok? If so, not being there is also a decision – just a poor one.

  2. Secure your handle and setup now. Registration has been open since June 1st. Set up your brand name, shop profile, and legal essentials (impressum, return policy, shipping) properly.

  3. Think in terms of creators, not commercials. On TikTok, credibility sells, not high-gloss production. Real faces, honest demos, live shopping with personality.

  4. Treat product data like SEO. Clear titles, relevant keywords, good reviews, tidy categories. Discoverability in the Shop tab can be planned.

  5. Start small, measure rigorously. Test three to five hero products, try a live format, monitor conversion rates and returns. Scale what works.

The most important takeaways in 30 seconds

  • TikTok Shop has been live in Austria since June 15th – a genuine new sales channel, not just a trend.

  • Relevant for businesses of all sizes: SMEs sell across Europe via “Sell Across Europe”, while major brands defend their market share with their target audience.

  • TikTok is a search engine: product data and findability are the new SEO in the Shop tab.

  • Decide now and launch properly – keep it small, creator-led, and measurable.

Is TikTok Shop worthwhile for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)?

What fees apply to TikTok Shop?

Registering a seller account is free of charge; a sales commission is charged per transaction. At the launch in Germany, it was around 5% (incl.
