Spoiler alert! They are typing your name into Instagram and TikTok right now – and if nothing comes up, you don't exist to them.

Social Search is no longer just a buzzword in 2026, but lived reality on every mobile display. For the first time in consumer research history, 46% of Gen Z no longer start their product searches on Google, but on social media. For millennials, it's 35%. Put simply: anyone in 2026 who still believes that a stylish website plus a few Google Ads are enough to get found is currently setting up their shop window on the wrong street.

No, this isn't just a generational fad you can simply wait out. The habit is moving up the ladder – Gen Z today, affluent millennials in two years, who have already adapted their behaviour long ago. It directly affects the very search queries that drive revenue: restaurant nearby, hairdresser, tax consultant, new couch, the right gift.

Is Instagram the new Google?

In mid-June 2026, Instagram announced it would give significantly more visibility to original content and carousels in the feed – and unlock professional tools like content planning, the insights dashboard, and access to trending audio for all public accounts. Sounds like a nerdy feature update. But it’s quite the opposite. It’s the platform openly stating: "We have become a search engine – so kindly optimise your content for it."

At the same time, recent figures show that this isn't a TikTok vs Google duel, but multi-platform search: 67% of Gen Z search on Instagram, 62% on TikTok – and still 61% on Google. Your customers aren't just searching elsewhere; they are searching everywhere. And they expect to find you in each of these places – with a consistent answer, not with a dead account that last posted in 2023.

And the home advantage? You have that right here in Austria. According to the 2026 Youth Internet Monitor, 64% of young people use TikTok and Instagram respectively, both with daily usage rates exceeding 77%. Yes, in Austria – that’s your local target audience typing into the search bar every single day.

Why this applies to both small shops AND large corporations

The knee-jerk reaction is often: "Social search is just for beauty brands and Gen Z fashion." Wrong. The strongest discovery categories on social are fashion, beauty, food & recipes – and local services. Exactly what SMEs in Salzburg, Linz, and Vienna make their money with. If someone types "brunch Salzburg" into the Instagram search and your café doesn’t show up, the competitor with the better-captioned Reel wins. Period. It's not about virality; it's about the simple question: Are you there when someone searches with purchase intent?

For major brands, the strategic lever shifts: social search doesn't cannibalise traditional SEO logic, it doubles down on it. You need visibility on the Google SERP and in TikTok search and within AI-generated answers that pull their sources from precisely these channels. This is no longer just a channel issue; it’s visibility architecture. And it belongs on the executive board slide, not in the social media intern's backlog. Those who continue to pour 90% of their budget into a website that is merely one touchpoint of the customer journey are optimising for the past.

The GEO factor: When AI cites your posts as a source

Now for the part most people still underestimate. Generative engines – like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and the like – increasingly pull their recommendations from publicly discoverable, well-structured content. And social content featuring clear search intent, clean captions, and genuine reviews is exactly that kind of source. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and social search are two sides of the same coin: both reward content that provides a quoteable answer to a specific question. Optimising for social search today simultaneously builds your visibility in tomorrow's AI answers. Double the impact with the same effort – that's the real reason why we're moving this topic right to the top of the agenda.

How to make your brand discoverable – in 5 steps

  1. Treat every platform like a search engine. Keywords belong in spoken captions, on-screen text, hashtags, and alt text. Nobody searches for "Summer vibes ☀️". They do search for "Vegan brunch Linz".

  2. Create answer-driven content, not image posts. What do customers type in before buying? Turn every real question into a short video. That's the social equivalent of SEO – search intent trumps glossy aesthetics.

  3. Original beats repost. Instagram now actively favours original content and carousels. Keep reposting other people's Reels, and you'll rank yourself right out of the equation.

  4. Comments are your conversion lever. 69% of Gen Z say comments and reviews are decisive when making a purchase. Moderate them like a product page, not like an annoying chore.

  5. Measure discoverability, not vanity. Reach from "Search" and "Explore" in your insights is your new key KPI. Likes are nice to have; getting found pays the bills.

This exact visibility architecture is what we at oha! are currently building out with our clients. Moving away from "We just post regularly" towards "We get found for the right search queries – on Google, within apps, and in AI answers." If you'd like to find out where your brand currently stands in social search, that's a case for our Online Consulting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Social Search

What does social search actually mean?

Social search describes the behaviour of searching for products, places, and answers directly within apps like Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube instead of on Google. In 2026, 46 % of Gen Z start their product search on social media. Platforms effectively function like search engines – with their own ranking logic.

Does social search also affect B2B and small businesses?

Yes. One of the strongest discovery categories is local services – precisely the SME sector. In B2B, research is increasingly shifting to LinkedIn and YouTube. If you don't show up there for relevant search terms, you are invisible in the decision-making process, no matter how good your website is.

Does social search replace traditional Google SEO?

No. Recent figures show multi-platform searching: Instagram (67 %), TikTok (62 %), and Google (61 %) are almost tied among Gen Z. Social search complements SEO; it doesn't replace it. What makes sense is a visibility strategy across websites, social platforms, and AI-generated answers.

How do I optimise my posts for in-app search?

Think in terms of search intent rather than image: include relevant keywords in spoken captions, on-screen text, hashtags, and alt text. Answer real questions from your target audience in short videos, focus on original content instead of reposts, and actively moderate comments – 69 % of Gen Z cite them as decisive for purchases.

Which metric shows whether social search is working?

Instead of likes, what counts is reach from the sources "Search" and "Explore" in the platform insights, as well as profile visits and saved posts. These figures show whether you are actually being discovered – and not just seen by existing followers.

How much does it cost to get started with a social search strategy?

The first step primarily requires strategy, not budget: an assessment of which search terms your brand needs to be discoverable for, and a content format that serves search intent. At oha!, we kick this off with online consulting and then implement it within ongoing social media management.
