Short & sweet
ChatGPT Ads have been live in Austria and 30 other European markets since 24 August 2026 – the largest expansion of OpenAI's advertising business to date.
Ads are only shown to users on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Business remain ad-free.
Self-booking is not yet available in Austria: self-service in the Ads Manager has not been unlocked in the entire DACH region. Bookings can be made via the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, technology partners, and the major agency networks. Registration is already open.
Billing is based on CPM, CPC, and conversion optimisation. Reliable benchmarks for Europe are not yet available.
The triggering signal is the conversational context, not the keyword. Consequently, the strongest phase is consideration.
Reality in Austria: one in five people uses AI for purchasing decisions – 42 % completely reject it when shopping (EU average: 34 %).
Sensible sequence: review organic AI visibility, build landing pages around conversational context, set up measurement, and only then allocate budget.
ChatGPT Ads have been live in Austria since 24 August 2026. OpenAI announced the expansion to 31 European markets on 18 August, calling it the largest geographical expansion of its advertising business to date. Ads appear below the response, are labelled as sponsored, and are displayed exclusively to users on Free and Go plans.
Important for Austrian businesses: You cannot book self-service just yet. Self-service via Ads Manager is not unlocked in Austria at launch and will follow later in the summer, according to OpenAI. ChatGPT Ads are currently bookable via three routes: the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, technology partners, and major agency networks – Digiday mentions Publicis, Omnicom, WPP, Havas, Dentsu, and MediaPlus. However, you can already register today as a company or agency.
This applies equally across the entire DACH region: Self-service is also not open at launch in Germany and Switzerland. Anyone reading that they can immediately book ChatGPT Ads independently via Ads Manager in Germany is confusing the situation with non-European markets.
So much for the facts. Now for the part hardly anyone is writing about this week: The channel is open; the Austrian market is not.
What specifically changes with ChatGPT Ads in Austria?
Until now, ChatGPT was a purely organic playing field for brands. You could work towards appearing in answers – but you couldn't buy your way in. As of today, you can.
The scale behind this is far from niche. Pursuant to Article 24(2) of the Digital Services Act, OpenAI Ireland reports 159.1 million average monthly active users of ChatGPT Search in the EU for the six-month period ending 31 March 2026. By comparison: The threshold triggering special DSA rules for Very Large Online Platforms is 45 million. Accordingly, the EU Commission is currently assessing whether ChatGPT Search will be classified as a Very Large Online Search Engine.
For Austria, HORIZONT confirmed the launch date on 19 August. The technical capabilities OpenAI includes with this rollout: CPM and CPC bidding plus conversion optimization, geo-targeting, custom audiences, as well as measurement via OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, and third-party integrations. According to the company, "tens of thousands" of marketers worldwide have already advertised on ChatGPT since the pilot launched in the US in February 2026.
“The channel has been open since today. The Austrian market has not.”

How do ChatGPT Ads differ from Google Ads and Meta Ads?
The crucial difference is not the placement, but the signal. Google Search knows your search query. Meta knows your behavior. ChatGPT knows the conversational history – meaning budget, timeframe, requirements, and everything someone has already ruled out previously.
Criterion | ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads | Meta Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
Triggering Signal | Context and intent of the ongoing conversation | Specific search query | Interests, behavior, audiences |
Strongest Funnel Stage | Consideration / Mid Funnel | Bottom Funnel, explicit purchase intent | Upper Funnel, demand generation |
Billing | CPM, CPC, conversion optimization | CPC, tCPA, ROAS | CPM, CPC, conversion bidding |
Measurement | OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, third parties | Google Tag, Enhanced Conversions | Meta Pixel, Conversions API |
Access in Austria | No self-service – only Ads Solutions team, technology and agency partners | Self-service for years | Self-service for years |
Benchmarks available? | No – none yet for Europe | Yes, extensive | Yes, extensive |
This leads to an uncomfortable consequence for planning. ChatGPT Ads replace neither Search nor Paid Social. They occupy the gap between them – the moment when the need is defined, but the brand is not. Anyone simply shifting their Google budget will lose more at the bottom of the funnel than they gain in the middle.
A note of caution: Ready-made format lists for ChatGPT Ads have been circulating over the past few days. In its official European announcement, OpenAI does not provide an exhaustive list and explicitly announces further formats to come. The only binding source at present is what is documented in the OpenAI Help Centre – everything else is just a snapshot in time.
Why is Austria the toughest market for ChatGPT Ads?
Because the demand exists – but the permission does not.
A Shopfully study surveyed 6,605 people aged 25 and over across Austria and seven other European countries in the first quarter of 2026. The result: One in five people in Austria has used AI for a purchasing decision in the past twelve months, 89 % of them via ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and the like. That is good news for anyone looking to shift budget right now.
The bad news appears two paragraphs further down in the very same study. 42 % of Austrians surveyed fundamentally reject AI features while shopping and prefer to make their purchase decisions without AI. The European average sits at 34 %. Austria is therefore noticeably more sceptical than its neighbours – and it is precisely to this audience that OpenAI is opening the ad break today.
A representative Marketagent survey of 1,016 Austrians from April 2026 aligns with this: 85 % demand mandatory labelling of AI content, and 54 % trust online content less nowadays. At least OpenAI delivers on this point – ads are clearly labelled, conversations remain private from advertisers according to the Advertising Principles, and advertising does not influence the generated answer. Winning in this market requires not only respecting this separation, but making it visible.
How do you approach ChatGPT Ads sensibly?
Not with budget. With an audit.
Measure organically first. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude the ten questions where your brand should appear. If you don't show up, you are buying your way into a conversation that moves on without you.
Audit landing pages for context, not keywords. Users coming from a conversation have already stated their budget, timeline, and requirements. A generic category page breaks that thread.
Clarify access; don't wait for self-service. Register at ads.openai.com and reach out to the OpenAI Ads Solutions team in parallel. If you want to move faster, work with a technology partner or one of the major agency networks.
Set up measurement before spending the first euro. OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API belong in place before launch, not after. Without them, you will see clicks and nothing else.
Start small and additive. Use test budget from the mid-funnel pool, not from your search budget. Search continues to capture direct purchase intent.
Adapt tonality to Austrian scepticism. With 42 % rejection, ads masquerading as genuine recommendations will not win. Presenting yourself clearly as an offer beats disguised familiarity.
Build your own benchmarks. There are no robust comparative metrics for Europe yet. The first four weeks are your baseline – document them thoroughly.
At oha!, we have been registered as advertisers since the Austrian launch and are preparing the initial campaign setups. The key takeaway from this preparation is unglamorous yet crucial: The bottleneck is almost never the ad copy, but the landing page. Someone coming from a conversation is already three steps ahead of someone coming from a Google search – yet they still land on a page that starts from scratch. How we solve this is detailed under Performance Marketing. The organic side of this – whether your brand appears in AI answers at all – is covered under AI & Technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
What are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are advertisements displayed within ChatGPT. They appear below the response, are clearly labelled as advertising, and are separated from the answers. The selection is based, among other factors, on the context and intent of the ongoing conversation. According to OpenAI, advertising does not influence what ChatGPT answers.
Since when have ChatGPT Ads been available in Austria?
Since 24 August 2026. OpenAI announced the expansion to 31 European markets on 18 August 2026, including Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Nordic countries. The pilot had been running since February 2026 in the US and previously in eight other markets.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
There is no fixed price. OpenAI supports CPM and CPC bidding as well as conversion optimisation. The actual costs depend on competition, relevance, and bidding strategy. At market launch, there are no reliable benchmarks yet for Austria and Europe – those who start now build their own.
Can I book ChatGPT Ads myself in Austria?
No, not yet. Self-service via the Ads Manager is not enabled in Austria at market launch and, according to OpenAI, will follow later in summer 2026. ChatGPT Ads can currently be booked via the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, through technology partners, and via major agency networks, which according to Digiday include Publicis, Omnicom, WPP, Havas, Dentsu, and MediaPlus. However, businesses and agencies from Austria can already register for an advertising account at ads.openai.com.
Who sees ChatGPT Ads and who does not?
Ads are only served to users of the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts remain ad-free. According to OpenAI, accounts associated with individuals under the age of 18 will also not receive ads.
What targeting and measurement options are available?
OpenAI mentions geo-targeting and custom audiences for campaign delivery. Measurement is conducted via the OpenAI Pixel, a Conversions API, and integrations with third-party measurement solutions. As such, measurement extends beyond simple clicks.
Does advertising affect ChatGPT's responses?
According to OpenAI's advertising policies, it does not. Paid placements and organic responses remain separate, conversations are not shared with advertisers, and customer data is not sold. In addition, users can control ad personalisation themselves.
Are ChatGPT Ads GDPR-compliant?
OpenAI states that it keeps conversations private from advertisers, does not sell customer data, and provides users with control over ad personalisation. Regardless of this, each company remains responsible for its own data processing, such as when using the OpenAI Pixel and the Conversions API. This does not constitute legal advice – clarify tracking setups with your data protection advisor.
Do ChatGPT Ads replace Google Ads or Meta Ads?
No. The channels operate on different signals. Google Search responds to a specific search query, Meta to interests and behaviour, and ChatGPT to the context of a conversation. ChatGPT Ads are therefore particularly strong in the consideration phase and complement the media mix rather than replacing it.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Ads, GEO, and AI Visibility?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AI Visibility describe the organic side: whether and how a brand appears in AI responses. ChatGPT Ads are the paid side, sometimes also referred to as Generative Engine Advertising or Paid AI. Both work hand in hand – if you don't exist organically in AI responses, you buy your way into a conversation in which you would otherwise play no role.
