Rising prices for fuel, food and housing are leading Gen Z to rethink their impulsive consumption. “Doom spending” and “revenge travel” are losing relevance – in favour of a more conscious, more sustainable approach to money.

More mindfulness instead of shopping sprees

According to the latest Wells Fargo Money Study 2025, more than 75% of Americans are cutting back on their spending – a distinct increase compared to the previous year. Particularly intriguing: Gen Z, long known for rather impulsive financial decisions, is increasingly developing an awareness of saving, investing and budgeting.

“Sticker shock” – the surprise at drastically increased prices – is forcing many to rethink expenditure and postpone travel or major purchases.

Social media as a double-edged sword

While platforms such as Instagram and TikTok continue to fuel consumer trends, it is evident that Gen Z is becoming more discerning.

Instead of being enticed into rash purchases by glossy feeds, demand for genuine financial education and professional advice is rising. The days when influencers alone could sway financial decisions are over.

Why this matters for brands

For companies and brands, this shift means: content must focus even more strongly on real added value and authentic community engagement.

Campaigns aimed at triggering short-term impulse buys encounter a generation that looks more closely, compares – and decides consciously.

Especially on social media, transparency, storytelling centred on financial responsibility, and genuine user experiences are gaining importance.

A step in the right direction?

Gen Z is slowly saying goodbye to impulsive “doom spending”. Anyone looking to score points on social media today must offer real relevance – and understand that likes alone do not yet equate to loyalty.
