You have 8,000 followers. Your latest post has 47 likes. Congratulations – you just broke the algorithm for yourself.

That's the price for followers who aren't real – or who never really wanted what you do. Seen briefly, followed quickly, never thought of again. And now they sit in your follower list like guests at a party who left long ago, but whose names are still on the guest list.

The problem: Instagram sees this. The algorithm doesn't measure how many people follow you. It measures how many of them actually respond. And if the answer is "hardly anyone", it draws a clear consequence – it shows your content to fewer people. Not as a punishment. As logic.

Before we talk about what we at oha! do differently, we need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Because the real question isn't: How do I get more followers? The real question is: What does a follower actually mean?

A number. And the story behind it.

Faceless Instagram Accounts können Marken noch vieles beibringen

When someone follows an Instagram account, that person makes a conscious decision. In a feed that competes with hundreds of posts daily, he or she has said: Yes, this is relevant enough for me to permanently let it into my everyday life. That's no small thing. That's digital trust.

A follower count, on the other hand, is merely the result of these decisions – added up, visible, and unfortunately for many brands the only thing they pay attention to. Yet the number alone says remarkably little. It says nothing about whether these people will ever buy. Whether they recommend you. Whether they are interested in what the brand actually does. It is an indicator. Not proof.

The true value of a follower count lies in what's behind it: a community of real people with genuine interest. Everything else is just decoration.

The person who knows the algorithm has a clear opinion.

Adam Mosseri has been Head of Instagram since 2018 and is unusually transparent when it comes to the mechanisms of his own platform. What he has repeatedly emphasised in recent years is something every brand looking to seriously grow on Instagram should know.

Perhaps his most important statement: An account's follower count no longer dictates reach. Instagram shows every new post to a small test group first – and then decides based on actual engagement whether this content is distributed further or not. An account with 600 highly active, genuinely interested followers can clearly outperform an account with 60,000 ghost followers. Mosseri summed this up once again in a widely noted statement in late 2025: Visibility on Instagram comes from performance – not size.

The three metrics that truly count today according to Mosseri are Watch Time (how long people watch your content), Likes per Reach (not raw likes, but the engagement rate relative to actual reach) and – this is the most interesting part – Sends per Reach: how often your content is shared via DM. When people share content, they recommend it. That's the strongest signal Instagram recognises.

„Visibility on Instagram is not dictated by follower count alone. Performance plays a central role in how content travels across the platform.“
— Adam Mosseri, late 2025

What Mosseri said in his year-end statement beyond that goes even further. In a world where AI content is arbitrarily reproducible and authenticity can be technically simulated, only those brands that have built real relationships with real people will win. The only competitive advantage that cannot be copied is a community that is genuinely there.

Bought followers destroy your algorithm. Here's how.

Let's return to the scenario from the beginning – and make it even more concrete. What happens algorithmically when you buy 5,000 followers or collect accounts through aggressive mass-follow tactics that never had any real interest in your brand?

In the short term, the number goes up. That's it. What happens afterwards is a rather unpleasant chain reaction.

The engagement rate collapses – and with it, your reach.

Instagram calculates engagement relative to follower count. 5,000 new followers who never like, comment, or share will mathematically push your engagement rate through the floor. That sounds like an abstract numbers problem, but it's a very concrete visibility problem: An account with 2,000 real followers and 8% engagement is consistently distributed better by the algorithm than an account with 20,000 followers at 0.4%. The platform interprets low engagement rates as a signal that the content isn't relevant – and distributes it less accordingly.

You train the algorithm on the wrong audience.

Over time, Instagram learns who your audience is and distributes your content accordingly. Inactive followers unrelated to your niche "tell" the algorithm that your brand lacks clear positioning. The result: poorer distribution – even for content that is substantively strong and would resonate well with genuinely interested people. You produce good content, but it ends up reaching the wrong (or no) people.

And then there's the loss of trust – in yourself.

Anyone who buys followers knows deep down they're worthless. That takes a toll. On the motivation to invest in genuinely good content. On the willingness to take one's own Instagram strategy seriously. On the trust of collaboration partners, who today can easily tell whether a follower count is genuine or not. Buying numbers isn't just a poor strategy. It's a decision made against your own brand.

We don't think in target groups. We think in people.

Here lies the real difference between what we at oha! understand by Instagram Growth, and what most agencies make of it. We don't think in target groups. We think in people. Target groups are constructs. They exist in media plans, persona documents, and briefings. People exist on Instagram – with genuine interests, established habits, distinct subcultures, and communities where they feel at home. And that's precisely where our work begins.

Who should be in this community – and why?

Before we do anything, we ask a question that surprisingly few brands seriously consider: Which people do we want to have in this community? Not what demographics. Which people. What interests them? Which accounts do they already follow? What do they share, what do they comment on, what makes them actually follow someone? What connects these people to the brand we work for – beyond age, location, and purchasing power?
This understanding isn't optional. It's the foundation for everything that follows. It determines where we are active, who we interact with, which accounts we prioritise in community building, and which ones we deliberately ignore.

Properly welcoming new followers.

When someone follows an account, it's a signal. An invitation. And like any invitation, you can accept it – or simply ignore it. Many brands completely ignore new followers, yet this very moment is the biggest opportunity: What is the first thing this person sees from you? How do you react to their first interaction? How does a new follower turn into someone who stays, who comments, who recommends? That isn't a nice-to-have. That is the moment where a number turns into a human being – or doesn't.

Actively stepping into the right spaces.

Community building isn't a passive discipline – and it doesn't work on autopilot. We actively venture into the communities where our target people feel at home: in the feed, in Stories, in the comment sections of relevant accounts. Not spammy, not mechanical, but the way a real person does who knows the platform's culture. Because that's exactly what it is: real people doing this for our clients. No automation stack. No bot. Craftsmanship.

Measure monthly, develop strategically.

Growth without analysis is guessing. That's why we don't just look at follower numbers every month, but at the quality behind them: engagement trends, growth sources, interaction patterns. Which measures bring the most active followers? Where is more effort worthwhile, where less? These insights feed directly into the following month. For us, Instagram Growth isn't on autopilot. It is a learning process – month after month.

The numbers.

Numbers are always only part of the story, but they are the part that's quickest to explain. Here are four examples from real client projects, measured over one year from March 2025 to March 2026.

Client A – From standstill to consistent growth

An account that had been stagnating for months prior to our collaboration. The curve demonstrates what happens when community work is pursued consistently: no bought spike, no short-lived peak. Steady, continuous, sustainable.

Client B – Existing foundation, scaled systematically

Here, a foundation was already in place. We leveraged it and systematically extended it into relevant communities. The result: over 4,000 new people in one year who know exactly why they follow this account.

Client C – Built from the ground up

Started from virtually zero. Anyone who claims organic growth is slow has never truly built a community from the ground up – with the right foundation, the right people, the right strategy.

Client D – Scaling past the 6,000 mark

132% growth – on an account that didn't start out particularly small. That's what becomes possible when strategy, consistency, and genuine community understanding come together.

Followers are not the goal. Community is.

A follower count is a byproduct. It emerges when community work is done well – but it's never the starting point. The goal is a group of real people with genuine interest: who comment because they have something to say. Who share because they want to recommend. Who stay because they feel a sense of belonging. Who buy because they trust.

That can't be bought. Nor can it be automated. It emerges through craftsmanship, through strategy, and through the willingness to treat Instagram as what it is: a social space full of real people – not an advertising billboard, not a numbers game.
That is precisely what we build. Month after month.

Let's talk
